Tongue Tie
Tongue-tie is a condition where a short, tight, or thick lingual frenum tethers the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
This restriction can limit tongue movement and often leads to issues with swallowing, speech, breathing, and oral development. In children, this can affect feeding, speech, sleep, and facial growth. In adults, it may contribute to tension, TMJ issues, mouth breathing, and sleep-disordered breathing.
Unlike tongue thrust, which is a learned pattern, tongue-tie is often the root cause—present from birth and frequently missed during newborn exams.
How We Can Help:
Through Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), we assess tongue mobility and train the tongue to rest in its ideal position—up against the roof of the mouth. This supports proper oral function, facial development, and healthy breathing at every age.
If a tongue-tie release (frenectomy) is needed, therapy helps prepare the tongue and surrounding muscles beforehand, improving outcomes and supporting proper healing. This preparation is key to achieving lasting, permanent results—especially when paired with post-release care.
Benefits:
- Improves tongue mobility for better oral growth, speech, and function
- Supports proper palatal development and facial symmetry in children
- Reduces tension, improves posture, and enhances sleep in adults
- Increases the success of tongue-tie release procedures and helps prevent regression
